Our apprenticeship training programme is key to our business as we view all of our apprentices as possible future engineers, even leaders who can be identified and developed through training with Hanley Energy.
Electrical Apprenticeships
From a total of 5 apprentices in 2017 to a total of 54 to date, we are extremely proud of our apprentice training programme.
Career development, experience and travel is prioritised within the business, with a number of apprentices who have qualified as electricians, since progressed into roles within our Commissioning and UPS teams. Two such individuals now work for Hanley Energy in the USA and Australia as key members of the team – the possibilities are endless.
Oliver Cooney completed his apprenticeship at Hanley Energy and is now senior controls site technician in its Australian division. “The apprenticeship was hands on, I was given responsibility and got great experience with the electrical equipment that we built and installed. In my current role I install, commission and service our equipment for our clients in Asia and Australia and grow our reliability and service over this side of the world.”
Apprentices spend four years working on Hanley Energy products which are bespoke to the company and nurture and grow their skills with leading Hanley Energy mentors.
Apprenticeship in Industrial Electrical Engineering
We are also a registered employer of the Apprenticeship in Industrial Electrical Engineering program, leading to the award of a Level 7 Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng).
The electrical apprenticeship is the only field that offers this opportunity to advance in studies. This degree is specifically designed as a progression program for qualified electricians who wish to upskill and to acquire advanced knowledge, competences and skills to move into engineering roles in the industry.
Michael Yorke, Test Engineer and Team Lead, at our Kingscourt Manufacturing Facility, will graduate from this course in May 2022. “I mentioned my intention to do the Engineering course when I joined Hanley Energy and they were very keen and encouraging when it came to upskilling and progressing. It’s a testament to the company that they’re willing to invest in their people.”
The Level 7 Bachelor of Engineering is a two year part-time course and designed specifically for qualified electricians who have served their four year apprenticeship. “I’d fully recommend the course as it’s a great stepping stone even to get into a basic engineering role once you’ve finished your time. The support I’ve been given in terms of time off for exams and study has been great, it’s brilliant to know you have a team behind you.”
Just go for it, put the effort and respect in and you will get the respect and gratitude back from your boss or college lecturer.

Oliver Cooney offers his advice to those starting an apprenticeship: “Just go for it, put the effort and respect in and you will get the respect and gratitude back from your boss or college lecturer. You need to be dedicated from the start and in no time you will be fully qualified in your field of work.”
